What is an MRI Scan?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This technique uses a very powerful magnet and radio waves to produce images of any part of the body. MRI does not use ionizing radiation for it’s images, as does x-ray and CT scan. Images are taken in layers and are of high quality. This scan usually takes between 30 to 60 minutes depending on which area is being examined.

When a patient comes in for their MRI they should have a copy of their prescription, insurance cards and photo I.D.. It is also important to bring any prior studies which may have been performed of the body part we will be scanning ; ex: x-rays, CT scans, Nuclear Medicine Scans, Ultrasound Scans or previous MRI scans for comparison.
